WEB 2.0 TOOLS FOR EDUCATORS

Web 2.0 tools for teachers

 Penzu

http://www.penzu.com/  Penzu is a simple online tool for creating a personal journal. Entries are automatically dated and students can add titles and text as well as images which appear in the margin of the page. They need to register to save their entries but this is quick and simple and only requires an email address. The journal entries can be shared by email or can be printed up and brought into class. If you email an entry to someone they receive the text in an email and a link to the journal page you sent. The journal page can only be edited and changed by the author not by the person who receives it.

 Voxopop

http://www.voxopop.com/  Voxopop is a web based audio tool that enables users to record their speaking for others to listen and respond to.  It allows teachers and students to build up threaded audio discussions online similar to those on a text based bulletin board.

Listen and Write

http://www.listen-and-write.com/  Listen and write is a dictation exercise creation tool. It has a large number of dictation exercises already created in a number of languages, but you or your students can also create your own. The dictation tool offers a number of options to support and develop students’ ability to listen.

Wordle

http://www.wordle.net/create Wordle is a simple tool that enables you to create colorful graphic representations of texts based on word occurrence from any given text. You just feed in the text either by copy and paste or by specifying a URL and then Wordle will analyze the text and create a colorful representation with more frequently occurring words appearing much larger than less frequent words. You can adjust colors and designs to suit your taste.

Learning Disabilities

Dysgraphia

Dysgraphia, a learning disability characterized by difficulty forming letters, organizing thoughts on paper, spelling and connecting words to form sentences, can have far-reaching effects on a student's success. Widely available technology can help students bypass the writing process and express themselves more effectively

*******************************************************************************
The National Center for Learning Disabilities provides teachers and families with up to date information, resources, and research about the many learning disabilities that affect so many of our students today.

are diagnosed with LD and receive special education services in our schools,
representing 41 percent of students with disabilities nationwide.

Art is a form of expression that can be used to allow these students to communicate in their own way how they truly feel about the world they live in.  The world we don't see.  Their private thoughts. The following link provides a slide show of art created by learning disable students.

You have to look at the right of the page to find the art done by the students

The art is heart-breaking and beautiful at the same time.

Read, Read, Read

Reading aloud with children is known to be the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually require for learning to read.
- Marilyn Jager Adams

About Reading Rockets
Website: http://www.readingrockets.org

Reading Rockets is a national multimedia project offering information and resources on how young kids learn to read, why so many struggle, and how caring adults can help.

The Reading Rockets project is comprised of PBS television programs, online services, and professional development opportunities. Reading Rockets aims to inform and inspire parents, teachers, childcare providers, administrators, and others who touch the life of a child by providing accurate, accessible information on how to teach kids to read and help those who struggle.

Reading Rockets is an educational initiative of WETA, the flagship public television and radio station in the nation's capital, and is funded by a major grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. The project is guided by an advisory panel made up of leading researchers and experts in the field of reading.

The link below will take you directly to the YouTube videos of authors and other personalities discussing how they got into writing or why reading is so valuable.  One in particular, Allen Say, appeals to me.  I identify with something he said, "Writing English has always been a terrifying prospect to me." It is my secret desire to write children books someday.
